Cancer Radiotherapy

Colon cancer is one of the most prominent cancers in the UK and is responsible for over 16,000 deaths each year. It develops when cells in the colon become cancerous and start to multiply in an uncontrolled way. In this article I will be discussing three of the most effective colon cancer treatments.

Cancer is a disease that causes your cells to grow in a rapid and uncontrollable way which leads to the development of a malignant (cancerous) tumour. In the worst cases cancer can turn out to be fatal. However, there are treatments available. In this article I will be discussing three of these potential cancer treatments.

The primary intention of cancer treatment is to achieve cure and improve survival. Another equally important intention gaining importance in recent years is to conserve the structural and functional aspects of the organ with cancer. Radiotherapy has an important role in breast cancer as it helps in the attainment of both these objectives of cancer treatment.

Radiotherapy involves exposing cancer cells to a tumor to radiation (we say also ray or radiation) that inhibit the multiplication of cells and cause their destruction. These rays are produced by particle accelerators, or by radioactive sources. This is called "radiation" of the tumor.

Radiotherapy and chemotherapy are mainly used for palliative purposes in pancreatic cancer. Radiotherapy and chemotherapy are usually combined with surgery, the main modality of treatment, in pancreatic cancer management. Pancreatic cancer cells are highly resistant to chemotherapy drugs.

The choice and implementation of proper treatments for locally advanced prostate cancer are maybe the most complicated challenges which the physician and his or her patients face. The treatment alternatives for the cancer consist of radiotherapy, watchful waiting (observation), hormonal therapy, and surgery.

There are different types of prostate cancer treatment options for men who have different stages of tumor development. There is low, intermediate and high risk localized and locally advanced prostate cancer and then tumors that return after initial treatment. Due to advancing research there is a lot of prostate cancer information on hand for patients to further their knowledge of the condition.

Alternate medicine and radiotherapy are a combination that is growing in popularity. Radiotherapy treatment is normally used in cancer patients, with the most common type known as external beam therapy. This name evolved because the treatment consists of a beam of radiation that comes from a very sophisticated machine.

Prostate cancer has many possible treatments, and often different treatments are used together to achieve the best results. One method of treatment is Brachytherapy, which is when a number of radiation seeds are implanted into the tumour in the prostate gland. The seeds then give a dose of radiation to the tumour over a period of time, usual several months although this varies.

The most commonly used treatments for lung cancer are surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. The exact treatment a lung cancer patient receives will depend on several factors. These include the type of cancer, the stage or extent to which it has spread at the time of diagnosis, and the overall health of the patient.
